John Stroup, newsletter editor for the Salem R/C Pilots Association, sent the following report from Dave Dibble, the club’s activities director. The club’s annual Polar Bear event was held January 1 in Adair, Oregon.
Polar Bear Fly-In (January 1, Adair, Oregon)
“This was the best Polar Bear fly-in we have ever had. First of all, it was worth all the effort we put into it.
Thanks to all 33 who registered (and the one or two we missed). Thanks to Joanne Dibble for all her help and for making sure I got it all done. Thanks to Ron Terry, who is always there when I need him for this and all of that — he was everywhere, especially during setup and clean-up.
Thanks to Pete Melin for helping to set up and for taking pictures and video clips. He was a great help selling the Polar Bear sweatshirts. Thanks to MM and MM (Matt and Mary Myatt) for bringing marshmallows and sticks to roast them on. Thanks to Glen Malone for providing his fire pit where we roasted marshmallows and warmed ourselves.
Thanks to Bob Ramseyer and Wayne Austin for bringing out their propane heaters, and to Wayne for handling registration duties. He also sold Polar Bear patches. Wayne is a former president of the Salem R/C Pilots Association.
Thanks to Alan Lasneski for his help with cleanup and for assisting with registration. Thanks to Dan Anderson for bringing the water and for all of his help. Thanks to John Stroup for taking photos and bringing the checkbook. Thanks to anyone I missed and to all of you who came to support our club’s function.
The first one in the air was Richard Stutrud. The second pilot in the air was Pete Melin, followed by Glen Malone. These gentlemen each received “big shiny new chili mugs” for being the brave ones to show us how it’s done.
There was no shortage of willing pilots braving the cold and slightly windy day. We got to see both longtime and new pilots at this outing; I only wish I had had more time to visit with everyone.
One new fact to put in the books: last year we had two or three electric-powered airplanes. This year electrics accounted for 75% of all the airplanes that flew. We have room for the helicopter guys, too — maybe next year they will join us.
We went through three large crock pots of homemade chili with all the fixings (cheese, onions, chips, and crackers). The almond rock candy was a big hit.”
