It was a busy month here in District XI! I’ll start with the CL Combat meet at Harvey Field on the south edge of Snohomish, Washington. This wasn’t like my memories of CL as a kid. These were hot Nelson 40s doing 120-plus mph in a wild dance in the sky. I found myself watching the herky-jerky arm movements as much as trying to follow the airplanes.
This is the opposite of last month’s repot on the Indoor FF event! This is a must-see event to appreciate this controlled chaos!
Next was a road trip to Idaho—Idaho Falls at the Desert Eagles Model Airplane club field. It was Spad Pylon Racing day where contestants from several clubs in the area get together for sport Pylon Racing. Three clubs take turns hosting the monthly races. The Magic Valley Aeromodelers, the Boise Area Radio Kontrol Society, and the Desert Eagles have grown this event from only a couple of pilots to almost 20 sport Pylon Racers.
One of the fliers is our newest associate vice president (AVP), Bryan Wood, who I had the pleasure of getting to know a little better. Bryan has taken Al Culver’s place as the Idaho AVP. Al was the AVP in Idaho for decades and wanted to pass on the job to a younger member. Thanks for the many years of service, Al.
After the races ended Bryan and I made the short drive from Idaho Falls south on Highway 15 to the Red Baron RC Modelers Club field in Shelley, Idaho. The club was hosting an RC Combat event to celebrate National Model Aviation Day and support the Wounded Warrior Project.
Where Eagles Dare was organized by Randy Shioaki. The first-place winner of Scale Combat was Brent Anderson of Syracuse, Utah, and the winner of Open B Combat was Wayne Mayo from Boise. David Baker, the club president, said they were close to the $2,000 goal for this year’s fundraiser for the Wounded Warrior project. Bryan and I enjoyed our time with this great club, and Bryan has been working with them to become a Leader Club.
Back in the van, I headed north and west to stop in Wenatchee on my way home. The Red Apple Flyers were hosting two events in one, the Wenatchee Scale Rally, and the Northwest Scale Aeromodelers Championships. AVP Del Herring was the CD for the Northwest Scale Aeromodelers and the event director was Roly Worsfold.
AVP Mike Mosbrooker preformed his duties as a new Scale judge. Tom Wolf won Expert class with his outstanding D.H. Mosquito. All the results can be found on the event’s website at www.nwsam.org. This is a great event to enjoy as a contestant or spectator!
The last event I attended this month was the Vintage R/C Society Northwest Fly-In at the Rogue Eagles RC Club’s Agate Field in Medford, Oregon. First I have to apologize to Bruce Tharpe for misspelling his name a couple of months ago in my column.
The pilots’ raffle included a Goldberg Falcon 56 receiver-ready airplane and many other vintage items. Pilots’ choice went to a superbly covered Super Pacer by Bruce Tharpe. Complementary donuts and coffee added to the event.
Check out the article on basic plastic film covering tools by Bruce in the August Rogue Eagle newsletter at www.rogue-eagles.org.
