Report
February 1 and 2 found many area fliers at Puyallup, Washington, for the Northwest Model Expo. This year’s event was well attended, and the Mt. Rainier Radio Control Society did its usual fine job of putting this together. The event requires a large number of people to make it a success, and this club always manages to make it the event of the winter. Hats off to all who make this possible. Here are a few of the aircraft that were on display.
The District XI meeting was also held at this event and several awards were presented.
Bill Smith was awarded AMA’s second-highest honor, the Distinguished Service Award, for his work as the District Event Coordinator. Bill has held this position for many years and his efforts have all but eliminated conflicts and scheduling problems. Thanks again, Bill, for all of your work!
An Award of Excellence was given to the Boeing Employees Aerodynamic Modelers (BEAMs) for their continuing work with young people. The club’s Day in the Hangar events have to be seen to be believed. It is wonderful to see the enjoyment of the youngsters as they fly and tune their models. It is hard to tell who is having the most fun — the kids or the senior members.
Juan Fernandez of Olympia, Washington, was given the District Service Award. Two years ago I wanted to set up a District website. Juan volunteered to take on that project and had a site up and running very quickly. This has been a great asset to the district and has greatly improved communications. Juan is in the process of upgrading the site.
The Barons Model Club hosted a Bugs-or-Better event this past fall. The event included a Bug Pylon Race. I opted to be the flagman, figuring that was the safest place on the course. The bugs were so slow you could time them with a sundial. Quickies were flown against the bugs and were able to beat them even with a three-lap handicap. We also had drag races with airplanes without wings, which were good for a few laughs.
Don't forget to send stories and pictures of your events so I can share them with others. Keep your airspeed up!
