District XI Report - 2003/07

July 2003 157
SAFETY FIRST: Two years ago I
suggested to our club that we might
consider installing safety barriers for the
pilot’s stations. In my travels during the past
few years, I have seen several of these at
fields and have seen them prevent pilots
from being struck.
Many years ago, I flew from behind one
of these and to tell the truth, I didn’t care too
much for it. However, since installing them
at our field, I have seen numerous occasions
where these have prevented accident or at
least close calls.
Ours are constructed of PVC pipe with
the orange plastic construction safety fence.
The fence is secured with plastic “tie
wraps.” They are about hip high and are
long enough that two or three people can
stand behind them comfortably. They have
side wings at roughly a 45-degree angle.
The wings are approximately three feet
long.
Fred Wesselman, our club fix-it expert,
built these and deserves the thanks of those
of us who have been protected by the
barricades.
The Barons Model Club in Spokane,
Washington had its ninth annual show and
swap meet. There were 76 swap tables, 56
display aircraft, and 40 boats. There were
more than 500 paid admissions according to
event chairperson, Tony Worman.
Juan Fernandez, our District XI
Webmaster, has been working on upgrading
our Web page. We can post pictures to the
site and list your coming events. There are
links to club Web sites and if your club
would like to be on that list, contact Juan at
[email protected].
The Nampa Scale Squadron will be hosting
a U.S. Scale Masters Qualifier on June 20-
22. For more information, contact Ray
Schellekens at (208) 658-6767. This is a
great place to fly and the Nampa Scale
Squadron members are very gracious hosts
and run a great event.
On July 12 and 13, the Portland
SkyKnights will host its world-famous
Northwest Seaplane Championships at Pine
Hollow Resort. Contact Dale McDonald,
(503) 761-3109.
I have wanted to attend this event for
years and each time something has come up
to prevent it.
The SkyKnights will also be holding the
Evergreen Scale Masters Qualifier at Grant
Sharp’s Field in Molalla, Oregon. Dale
McDonald, (503) 761-3109, is again the
contact person.
The Northwest Free Flight Championships
will be held at Parkers Field on August 23
and 24. Contact Bruce Grell or Bob Stalick,
5066 NW Picadilly Cir., Albany OR 97321.
These are just a few of the many upcoming
events around the district. Check our Web
site for a complete listing, courtesy of the
Boeing Hawks.
