August 2003 167
IT IS WITH the greatest regret that I have
to advise you of the passing of Chick
Young.
Chick was born on December 10, 1919
and was a member of the Boeing Hawks
and the Mount Rainier Radio Control
Society. He was an Associate Vice
President for our district for many years
and has been a good friend and help to
many including myself.
Chick had been suffering from a lung
infection for a month and passed away on
April 29, 2003. Chick will be missed.
ON MAY 2, 3, and 4, the Red Apple
Flyers of Wenatchee, Washington, hosted
its annual Apple Blossom Festival Fly-In.
The Apple Blossom Festival draws
thousands of people from all over the
Pacific Northwest.
There are parades, car shows, and
entertainment for everyone during this
festival. In addition to the fly-in, the Red
Apple Flyers host an open house for the
public.
This year, as in the past, hundreds of
people came to the club’s beautiful field to
spend the afternoon. This is one of the
nicest fields in the Northwest and is the
result of many years of hard work and
dedication.
John Divis was the event organizer and
contest director (CD). In keeping with the
club’s reputation as gracious hosts and
great organizers, this year was no
exception.
There were approximately 40 fliers in
attendance, many from a great distance
away. This traditional event gets larger each
year.
Bob Heikell, Moses Lake Flyers, with his
T Craft from AMA plans service. Bob and
Frank Wright displayed their Miss Vedol
in the Apple Blossom Parade and
received a first place award for their
unusual float. I hope to have those
photos next month.
Don Belisle, Burlington, Washington, with
his Ziroli Spirit of St. Louis. Don has a G-
38 in this model and it is almost ready for
its test hop.
Associate Vice President (AVP) Gene
LaFond, Red Apple Flyers, with his Pete.
Gene took 17th at Scalemasters with this
scratch-built model.
This is Chuck Bulfinch, Anacortes,
Washington, with his Ziroli T-6.
Chuck’s chick is inspecting this aircraft.
This pet baby chick follows Chuck around
and when she gets tired, she hitches a
ride in Chucks pocket. She was the belle
of the ball!
The spectators were allowed a close-up
inspection of some of the airplanes.
Don Belisle visits with the crowd near his
Spirit. His Machi Racer is in the
background.
This shows more of the crowd. Many
people parked roughly a quarter mile
away just to see the show.
(L to R) Dave Love, Gary Ratcliff, Tony
Worman, and Bob Heikell show a display
of Bugs. During the weekend, these
fearless fliers, along with some mystery
guest pilots, braved the winds to do some
thermal soaring with the (ugh) Bugs.
’Till next time, Happy Trails.
