ON MEMORIAL weekend there were
two events held in northern Idaho, the first
being a cross-country fly hosted by the
Coeur d’Alene Aero-Modeling Society
(CAMS).
This event ran a closed course
beginning and ending at the CAMS field.
The idea was to hit a projected time as
closely as possible, from takeoff to
landing. The course was well laid out and
avoided populated areas. The flight time
averaged just longer than a half hour.
This was the first time for this event
and from the response I am sure it will not
be the last.
Cross-country fliers.
This same weekend, the Inland Empire
Soaring Society (IESS) hosted one of the
longest continuously running contests in
the Pacific Northwest: the Ed Huffman
Memorial Soaring Contest.
This event was renamed for Ed
Huffman after his passing. Ed was a
member of the Barons Model Club as well
as the IESS and served as the secretary of
the Barons for many years. Ed was a getthings-
done kind of guy and an asset to
both clubs. I am proud to be able to call
him a good friend.
Fliers at the high starts.
Steve Cook prepares to launch Bill
Weirauch’s glider.
Guy Russo just as he launches his
aircraft.
Steve Cook prepares his glider. Steve
enjoys flying all types of models and
does it all well. If it has wings Steve flies
it!
Bill Weirauch and another good friend,
contest director Rob Kirkpatrick.
Emily, Will, and James Hundley came to
the event to learn about soaring. They are
members of CAMS and the Farragut Flyers
and live in Osburn, Idaho. They started
flying Control Line and have been flying
Radio Control for approximately three
years.
Having five fliers in their family, they
are considering starting their own club in
Osburn. Great idea!
Until next time.
