Gerry Becker sent the following. I want to apologize for not getting this in my column sooner.
The Bell-Air R/C Flyers of Bellingham, Washington, in conjunction with Hoby Acres (the flying site owners), recently completed major flying site upgrades which greatly enhanced the overall safety for pilots and spectators.
- A new 4-foot-high chain-link fence was installed in the center of a 2-foot-wide concrete mowing strip, providing a physical separation between the pit area and the spectator area. Russ Haines, the club president, and George Yewell, representing Hoby Acres, coordinated the design, layout, procurement, and the contractor to install the fence.
- A 10-foot-high tower was constructed by club members for use by the safety officer, providing an overview of the entire flying site. In addition, spotters can be positioned to help locate downed aircraft and provide direction for recovery.
- Five 5 x 4-foot concrete pilot stations were constructed, each having 3-foot-high safety barriers on three sides. These were made from PVC pipe and construction safety netting.
These upgrades were completed in time for the club’s 14th annual Big Bird Meet, held June 7 and 8, 2003. More than 35 pilots and 40 airplanes attended the two-day event, and many pilots voiced their pleasure with the site’s safety improvements.
All involved deserve many thanks for their safety concerns and their hard work to make this a safer place to fly.
Until next time.
