Bay Area RC Fliers (Coos Bay, OR)
The Bay Area Radio Control (RC) Fliers in Coos Bay, Oregon, held their annual awards banquet on December 13, 2003. Club president Phil Shellabarger presented Herb Sessums with the Person of the Year award. Herb was honored as the person who has done the most for the club and for the hobby during 2003. He has been instrumental in promoting a number of projects, secured the Roosevelt gym for indoor flying, and launched a program to introduce young people to RC building and flying.
Club member Dale Stump received a Life Membership in the Bay Area RC Fliers. Dale was recognized for his dedication and service to the club; the life membership was the members' way of saying thank you for his years of hard work.
Many clubs have similar awards, and this is a positive way of recognizing those people who do far more than their share to make things get done.
The club I belong to, The Barons, has a Dick Motz Award that is given annually to people such as Herb and Dale. Dick was always the first person to volunteer and most of the time did jobs that needed doing before most of us realized it. Although Dick has passed on, his memory is alive in this award.
We are fortunate to have Fred Wesselman, a man who can do anything, with us now. Fred is one of the oldest members of the club and one of the most active. We owe much of what we have at the field to him. My point is that most clubs have someone like these people — the hidden heroes. What they give to a club can't be measured, but their efforts are what keep clubs alive and enjoyable. If your club does not formally recognize these people, they will still most likely continue to do what they do because that's just the kind of people they are. These people should be recognized; they may not be club officers, but they are the ones that make a club work.
Until next time.
