Vice President's Report
I am glad to report that, after a leave of absence, Rick Allison is able to resume his duties as an Associate Vice President (AVP) for District XI. Welcome back, Rick.
Richard Snaer has resigned his post as AVP citing health reasons. Thank you for your service to our district, Richard.
At the Northwest Model Exposition in Puyallup, Washington, we held a District XI meeting and are planning to try having a workshop at future Northwest Expos to share ideas on youth programs.
Within our district there are numerous clubs that sponsor youth activities, and many of them have quite different approaches. It is our hope that, through sharing these ideas, we can encourage other clubs to get involved and provide them with suggestions on what can be done. Keith Varnau has offered to coordinate this effort. I spoke with Bob Brownell, the Northwest Expo chairperson, and he offered a club booth and a meeting room for this project. We are hoping as many clubs as possible will be represented in this sharing, and I will remind you of this in the fall.
Speaking of the Northwest Expo, Bob Brownell and all of the club members did an excellent job of putting on the event. The number of man-hours that go into a show of this size is staggering, and it takes a special group of people to devote so much time to make it all happen. All too often we see the people in the foreground and don't realize the support staff and how much they contribute to these events. My hat's off to all those who have, for years, brought us this great expo.
I noticed this year more of our Canadian friends in attendance. With the exchange rate being a bit closer than it has been for several years, it is again possible for them to attend.
In the charter-club renewal package you receive from the AMA, there is a change: the form now includes a place for the name of a club safety officer. I think most clubs have one, but if you don't, it is a good idea. The most important quality in a safety officer is diplomacy. Their contact should be to offer help and suggestions that may prevent accidents. They must be firm and fair, and any criticism should be constructive.
I believe we will see an incident-reporting system from the AMA in the future. This will help identify possible causes of accidents and, from that data, allow us to reduce some of those causes through training.
Onward and upward...
