THE WEEKEND of May 1, 2004, brought
the Wenatchee Red Apple Flyers Apple
Blossom Fly In. This is a very popular
weekend for the community, filled with all
kinds of activities and an elaborate parade.
There are car shows and craft fairs and
usually wonderful weather and this year
was no exception.
Modelers began arriving at this great
flying field as early as Wednesday and
many didn’t leave until Monday. The grass
field was manicured to perfection.
I didn’t get a head count on the number
of pilots but on Sunday when the airplanes
were lined up on the field for a display for
the public, the line ran the length of the
600-foot runway.
Don Belisle from Burlington, Washington
at the air show with his Grumman Ag-
Cat. This airplane was modeled after an
Ag-Cat that was modified for Air Show
stunt flying. Don also has several other
great large-scale aircraft including a
Spirit of St. Louis.
Bill Weins from Vernon, British
Columbia, Canada—eh!—with his
Goldberg Sukhoi and his Chipmunk
which was a real crowd pleaser.
Ray Care of Spokane, Washington, with
his air show Cub Krashbern T.
Throttlebottom, Famuss Air Show Pilot.
This airplane was started by my good
friend and former District XI Associate
Vice President (AVP) Gil Horstman. After
Gil’s passing, Ray finished the model for
him. Gil was a great friend to many of us,
and one of the best pilots I have ever met.
Ted Hendrickson of Concrete,
Washington, flew his 1/3-scale Cub and
towed his Cub glider. The Cub glider was
used to train glider pilots during World
War II and a few surviving ones had their
engines replaced after their military
service was over. The crowd enjoyed
Ted’s demonstration. Jim Carpenter and
Chuck Bullfinch did glider-flying duty.
Chuck Bullfinch flew his Fleet, and his
Texan was a real crowd pleaser. He did
numerous flights with full smoke and did
things I am sure the real Texan never
thought of doing. Last year I had a photo
of Chuck’s baby chick on the wing of the
Texan. Chuck told me he still has her but
she does not do as much traveling.
AVP Gene Lafond flew his Howard Pete
at Scale Masters and did quite well with
the aircraft.
For many of us, this was our first
glimpse of summer and went home sporting
our first sunburns. There was a large crowd
of spectators as this is part of the Apple
Blossom festival weekend and people from
all around the Northwest come to this
event.
The airplanes are put on display and the
visitors can look at them up close and talk
to the pilots.
Remember, it’s never too late to have a
happy childhood.
