District XI was well represented at the
2004 Scalemasters Championships.
Several fliers from the Pacific Northwest
traveled to Gardner, Kansas.
Central Washington area winners
included Bob Patterson, Bob Heikell, and
Gene LaFond.
Dick Hansen of Portland, Oregon,
finished 15th with his Sopwith 11/2
Strutter. Bob Heikell of Moses Lake,
Washington, finished 19th with his
Bellanca Series J-Long Distance, a model
of the first aircraft to cross the Pacific. Bob
also received Best Golden Age, Best
Civilian, and Best Documentation Awards.
Gene LeFond, associate vice president
in District XI, had the test pilot honors on
this aircraft about a year ago. The history
of the full-scale aircraft make for very
interesting reading. Gene, from
Wenatchee, Washington, flew his Extra
300 to a 23rd spot.
In Team Scale, Gary Parker flew Dick
Heininge’s Fleet Model 1 Biplane to a
fourth-place finish in Team Scale. Gene
also flew Bob Patterson’s Gee Bee
Ascender to a 13th place in Team Scale.
The Gee Bee Ascender, built by Bob
Patterson and flown by Gene LaFond
won the Best Engineering Achievement
Award.
Bob and Gene are flying the Ascender.
According to pilot Gene, flying the
aircraft is “a full-time job.”
Gene LaFond’s Extra 300 is touching
down following another great flight.
Bob Patterson, Gene and Donna LaFond,
and Bob and Dora Heikell on the
flightline at the 2004 Scalemasters
Championships.
Bob Patterson is from Wenatchee,
Washington, and the Ascender (above) was
an unusual project. There was very little
technical information available for this
aircraft. Bob also won the Best
Engineering Achievement award for this
unusual aircraft.
Bob Heikell poses with his big, orange
Bellanca.
Bob’s Bellanca Series J Miss Veedol
won Best Civillian Scale, Best Golden
Age Aircraft, and Best Documentation
awards.
Gene LaFond readies his Extra 300 for a
round of flying.
Gene told me he would have done
better at the qualifier if his scheduled
caller had been there, but I’m sure he will
forgive him (me) someday.
Congratulations to all!
