On August 21–22, 2004, the third annual Dawn Patrol and Classic Aeroplane Racing event was held at Grant Sharp’s field in Molalla, Oregon. The event is sponsored by the Northwest RC Aviators.

John Radebaugh, CD (Contest Director) of this unique event, states, “The best thing we did was move the event to Oregon after the first year.” The Oregon location makes Dawn Patrol more accessible to RC pilots from California, Oregon, Washington, and this year as far away as Arizona. Grant Sharp’s field is an excellent venue featuring a large grass runway, bleachers for public seating, and plenty of RV parking. It is located east of the I‑5 corridor south of Portland and is in easy reach for West Coast fliers.

More than 65 World War I and earlier vintage airplanes were present, with 45 registered pilots at Dawn Patrol 2004. World War I open flying—combined with a mixture of old-time air racing—is what this event is all about. Some outstanding examples of World War I scale models and early vintage aeroplanes were on display and flying.

Pilot’s Choice awards were given out on Sunday, in addition to more than $2,000 worth of prizes awarded to pilots holding one of the lucky tickets.

A new feature of the event in 2004 was racing for Proctor Antics. Because of the popularity of the Antic, and the excitement that the previous year’s racing provided, a special category for Antics was created. As in the Classic Aeroplane Race event, the Antics raced around a closed course, one at a time against the clock. The winner this year was Joe Topper flying an Antic powered by three—yes, three—O.S. 52s. This will be the one to beat next year!

John Cole, flying J.R.’s 1/4‑scale Sommer monoplane, won the Classic Aeroplane Race. Frank Wright of Ephrata, Washington, won the Pilot’s Choice award for Best Vintage model with his 1/4‑scale Hanriot. Scott Enochs of Gaston, Oregon, won Best World War I with his Spad. Joe Topper of Sandy, Oregon, won Best Static model with his Fokker Spin, and John Cole of Peoria, Arizona, was awarded Most Realistic Flying with his Fokker E.III Eindecker.

A special noon show was a surprise to all: two 7/8‑scale Nieuports flew two passes over the field, with the second pass including an actual touch-and-go! Pilots and builders Al Cleveland and Henry Bartley of Oregon manned these stunning Nieuport 11 replicas.

Major contributors to the event included Pepsi and Weinstein Beverage of Wenatchee, Washington. They will work with the local Pepsi bottler next year to provide additional public promotion. Proctor Enterprises, Balsa USA, Horizon Hobbies, Hitec, Great Plains, the Red Dog Saloon of Juneau, Alaska, and Northwest RC Aviators all made significant contributions, along with many other suppliers and manufacturers.

Dick Hansen Scale Videos was present and is now offering Volume 77, with an hour of coverage of Dawn Patrol 2004.

The 2005 event will be even bigger. Plan now to be at Grant Sharp’s field on August 20–21 in Molalla, Oregon, for Dawn Patrol 2005. For more information, contact J.R. at [email protected].
