Spring in the Northwest
Spring in the Northwest, in many cases, does not mean the start of the flying season. Many fields are still very wet; ours has 14 inches of hard, frozen snow, so activities are few and far between.
I receive quite a few inquiries about spring and fall float flying in British Columbia. The Shuswap Fun Fly is hosted by the Grindrod Airforce. This year the club got the flyer out a little earlier, so I can give you the scoop.
Shuswap Fun Fly (Salmon Arm, British Columbia)
This is the 32nd year for the longest-running float fly in the west. The dates are May 31 through June 8 and the location is Salmon Arm, British Columbia — nine days of float flying!
The site is Sandy Pointe Campground. I was told last year that the resort would be taking reservations for the first time this year, but the telephone number I was given is not working. Perhaps the campground is closed for the season.
Sandy Pointe has RV hookups and the usual conveniences and is just a few miles from town. There are several motels and good restaurants nearby. There is no landing fee for this event, but the club runs ongoing raffles to fund the fun fly.

I have attended both the spring and fall events for many years, and it is one of the first things I put on my calendar each year. I hope to see you there!
AMA Election and Member Participation
As you know, we recently had an AMA election. I believe the number of ballots returned was one of the lowest we have had. I had members tell me they did not know enough about the candidates and that's why they didn't respond.
In looking at our magazine, I notice we tend to focus on the "color" pages and overlook the sections that are not in color, even though those sections contain a lot of important information. All of the candidates had statements in the magazine, but many members apparently did not read them.
I receive quite a few inquiries about items that appear toward the back of the magazine—things that are posted each month—so this reinforces my theory about what we read and don't read.
I would like to hear your thoughts on this election issue, how we might be able to get more information to you, and how to increase the number of ballots cast. This is our organization and it can only be as good as we make it.
Thanks and Closing
Thank you to all of you who took the time to send me articles and photos of your events. I am sure they are enjoyed by our readers as much as I enjoy seeing what's going on around our area.
Until next time, Bruce.
