District XI Report - 2009/07

There isn't much going on up here in Washington State. The weather across the Northwest has been so bad that not much is happening. We are still getting snow in areas that normally don't get any, and winds are very high.

This year's weather is breaking all kinds of records. The last two events I attended were called off because of the weather.

Scholarship Award

Gordon Osberg sent the following about a scholarship awarded to a prospective pilot.

The Sanderson Field RC Flyers of Shelton, Washington, recently awarded a $500 scholarship to Shay Johnson, a 2009 graduate of Shelton High School. Shay is the son of Shawn and Shelly Johnson of Skokomish Valley.

Shay has been actively involved in high school activities, maintaining a 3.6 GPA, and is a commanding officer in the high school's Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps unit. His plans after graduation are to attend Westminster College, a branch of the University of Utah, studying aviation in the hopes of becoming a commercial airline pilot. He presently holds a private pilot's license.

In addition, the organization also awarded a continuing $500 scholarship to its 2008 Shelton High School scholarship winner:

  • Tori Peckham: continuing her aviation studies at Big Bend Community College. She has successfully completed her first year and is working toward her private pilot's license, also planning on a career as a commercial pilot.

ScaleHeliPalooza 2009

ScaleHeliPalooza 2009 will be held July 17–19 at the Fern Prairie Modelers field in Washougal, Washington.

The fifth annual NW scale contest is being hosted by the NW Scale Fliers in the hope of drawing interested people to the hobby, having a good time, and building new friendships. Scale helicopters bring out the best building and flying skills in the model helicopter community.

ScaleHeliPalooza intends to have the best event in the Western United States, and we would love to have you as a guest!

The field is located in Washougal, 14 miles east of Vancouver (north side of the Columbia River from Portland, Oregon). For more information and driving directions, visit the Fern Prairie Modelers website at www.fpmc.org.

Until next time.
