I AM PLEASED to announce that Bruce
Harlow, of Myrtle Creek, Oregon, has
agreed to be an associate vice president for
District XI. In my search for someone to
represent that area, Bruce came highly
recommended. I want to welcome him to our
team. Contact Bruce at bruceharlowjr@

The Bell Air R/C Flyers Club of
Bellingham, Washington, hosted its Fourth
Annual Warbirds over Whatcom and Fun-
Fly August 1-2. This event is a fine example
of what can be accomplished when lots of
club members participate in the preparation
and the operation of an activity.
The efforts of the club members were
greatly appreciated by all of those who
attended. The club is graced with an
excellent professional photographer among
its membership. You can thank John
Vanderhage for his great photo coverage.
John Vanderhage’s beautiful Dymond
Bearcat.
Now that is a big Fokker—or a very small
Brandon Belisle.
Gerry Becker congratulates Sam Gaglio.
Scott McCabee pilots his large Yellow
Aircraft P-38.
John Vanderhage is finding out how low his
Nitro P-51 can go.
There was no shortage of pilots, airplanes, or
spectators.
The weather was fantastic for this
year’s two-day event which was attended
by 30 pilots and 58 model aircraft. On
Saturday, the club was honored to have as
our guest Joseph F. Moser, a local WW II
P-38 pilot who survived being shot down
on his 44th mission over France and
subsequent internment in Buchenwald, a
Nazi concentration camp.
Mr. Moser recently published a book
titled A Fighter Pilot in Buchenwald.
During our half-time show Mr. Moser gave
a brief talk and signed copies of his book.
The club presented Mr. Moser with a club
T-shirt and hat which contained graphics
of a P-38 fighter. The club conducted a
flying demonstration with a P-38.
The noon gaggle of WW I, WW II, and
military trainers was again a big hit with
the crowd and the participating pilots.
Each of the three categories was flown
separately with several aircraft of the
appropriate type in the air at the same
time.
Pilot lunches were served and the
people in Bellingham can make really
good hot dogs.
The Fun-Fly on Sunday for all types of
aircraft was also well attended and the
great weather continued. At noon, for the
enjoyment of the crowd and participating
pilots, Ken Hubbar, a long-time Bell Air
club member put on a super 3-D
demonstration.
Again this year the Heritage Air
Museum from the Bellingham Airport
provided us with a full-scale flyover of a
L-19 Bird Dog and one of our club
members flew a 7/8-scale Tigermoth, which
he built in his garage.
We really appreciated the support of
our Canadian friends, especially because
some of them had to endure two-hour lines
to cross the border to get to Bellingham.
They are excellent pilots and modelers and
their presence always adds a great deal to
any event.
At the conclusion of the day on
Saturday, a few hand-crafted trophies were
awarded. Pilots’ Choice for best of show
went to Sam Gaglio from Oak Harbor.
Sam also received the best WW II award,
both for his great-looking P-47 done up in
German colors as a captured aircraft.
Rick Allison got the award for best
WW I aircraft for his finely crafted
Eindecker. Jerry McLean and Jay
Schoening took the best military trainer
trophy for their C-47. They also received a
team award.
Gerry Becker was the CD for this event
once again. He claims that this was the
best warbird event in this part of
Washington State. He’ll get no argument
from me.
