THE QUICK DECAL: While the following article was found in the Probable Cause newsletter of the Rocky Mountain Aeromodelers, the editor stated that the article originated with Don Bartic of the Indy Sportliners M.A.C.: "How neat it would be to decorate our latest creations with custom decals reflecting the bizarre imagination synonymous with free flighters. Not many of us have the skills to cut out tissue images that represent our original intent.

ENGINE COOLING PROBLEMS can be costly. In a recent Orbiting Eagles of Greater Omaha club newsletter, member George Lieb noted that improper engine cowling can cause poor engine runs, and in some cases do irreparable engine damage. The problem is improper cooling. While overheating engines and related problems are not thought of much by the average sport modeler, they are a great concern to the Scale modeler. Most Scale modelers work toward fully enclosing the engine in an effort to give the model the best possible Scale appearance.

NEW ITEMS: Aluminum Detailing Foil is a new product supplied by Jeff Foley of Foley Manufacturing Incorporated. The foil comes in 10 × 131/2 or 20 × 271/2-inch sheets, has an adhesive back, and can be applied to any model, providing it with a realistic aluminum finish. Once on the model, rivets or other details can be burnished or otherwise applied. I obtained some of the material and did a little experimenting. It cuts easily with a pair of scissors or hobby knife, and it can be applied with little or no problem to almost any well-prepared, clean surface. Since the foil will press into and pick up such imperfections as dents, nicks, and cracks, care must be taken during the base preparation and application procedures.

RON SEARS: It is with deep regret that I report the passing of Ron Sears of Waterford, Michigan. Ron was one of control line Scale's greatest supporters, and in general, a friend to all aeromodelers. Ron succumbed to cancer in March 1994. Ron was a modeler who paid great attention to detail, and was probably best known in control line circles for his museum-quality Stearman PT-17. This great model brought him the opportunity to compete in the 1984 CL World Championships in Paris, France.

DETAILING THE SURFACE of our models is probably one of the most difficult and time-consuming aspects of Scale model building. We sometimes go to great lengths to simulate panel lines, hatches, rivets, screws, and aircraft nomenclature. While there is nothing like seeing these details as real or working items, there is a handy solution for the modeler who doesn't want to spend months-or even years-detailing a Scale model.
