Radio Control: Pylon Racing
HAPPY New Year! By all indications, 1985 should be a great year for Pylon Racing. Quarter Midget is making a comeback, Formula One is just as strong as ever, and so is Q-500. And, I have received several inquiries on FAI. We all have read a lot of different articles on props. I have received some very interesting information from a fellow flier who does very well in Racing. He wishes to remain anonymous, but what he writes is so interesting that I am going to pass it on to you. So, here goes: "Just read your article about what props you have used relative to your geographic location (January 1984 issue). In this discussion, I will use prop names and sizes only as reference points, as I am a firm believer that what works for one won't work for another, even if the planes are identical in all respects. After about two or three years of asking `Why won't this prop do the same as the one I just took off?'

RACING is prospering in just about every club in the U.S.A. Yes, we all have some Racing in our blood. Some of us race with Indoor models on one end, and some of us (at the faster end) race Formula I. It is all competition. The Q500 racer is what seems to be the most popular now. Just about every club, regardless of size, has had or will have a Q500 race in the future. I received a letter from a friend that I haven't seen in many years-Tom Clark. Tom is living in Sarasota, FL and is racing Q500. The area club is called Valkyries. They held their first sanctioned Q500 race during the summer of 1984.

WELL, spring is here again, and it looks like we are in for a great year of racing. For those of you who will be racing FAI, if you haven't already heard, the World Championship races that were to be held in Canada will now be held in the United States. The FAI Pylon event will be held three days following this year's AMA Nationals. So, here's your chance for a week-and-a-half full of racing. What more could one ask for? For those of you who had to put up your gear for the winter, now is the time to recheck your complete system-I mean before you fly for the first time this spring. The batteries are-as far as I'm concerned-the weakest part of your system. If you took care of them throughout the winter (that means charging them at least once a month), you might not have a problem.

RC PYLON RACING has come a long way since it got its start in the early Sixties. Just about everyone who flies RC gets involved in some sort of racing at one time or another. We race anything from the basic trainer to today's very fast Forumula One. It seems that each club, each area, has its own idea of what is fun to race. In each club or area there are always a few who are dedicated enough to get the interest fired up and to get the ball rolling. Sometimes, these people put together special interest groups just for Racing.

THE RACING SEASON is in full swing, now, as summer is almost upon us. This is going to be another great year for Pylon Racing. For those of you who don't already know, there will be FAI Pylon at this year's AMA Nationals. It has been a long time since we have had this event. A lot of us are kind of glad to see it come back. This year's Nationals, to be held July 27 through August 4, will be held at Westover Air Force Base, Chicopee, MA. You don't want to miss this one! There will be enough Racing for everyone. FAI will take place on Sunday, followed by Quarter Midget and then Formula I.
