NMPRA Championships

WELCOME to Gainesville, TX (located about 65 miles north of Dallas), the site of this year's NMPRA Formula One Championships. It was sponsored by the Dallas RC Club, and Scott Kalmus was the Contest Director. The Dallas RC Club members are a very capable and dedicated group who have sponsored several earlier Formula One Championships and staffed the Pylon Racing events of the AMA Nationals when in the area. Without further ado, I want to thank the members of the Dallas RC Club and the ROTC. This is on behalf of all the fliers. We could not have held the event without them.

Radio Control: Pylon Racing

IT'S DECEMBER in Houston, TX, and the temperatures are in the seventies and even the eighties. For those of you up North, eat your hearts out. With the bad weather, most of you will be building new racers for the '86 season. But, let's not forget to take care of your engines and radio gear. Now is the time to go through the radio system checking the wires, connectors, batteries, etc. If your radio gear needs to be sent in for repairs, now is the time. Don't wait until it starts to warm up-when `most everybody else sends in their gear. If the radio is OK, then it is important to keep your batteries charged up for the winter. I charge mine every two to three weeks-or at least once a month. If you don't do this, you could end up with a bad battery pack in the spring.

ACTIVITY! I have just received a letter from Darwin Barrie of Scottsdale, Arizona. This has been an area which, for the past several years, has not had much racing, but it looks as though this is now changing. As of February 22-23, 1986 there will be a Formula One race with Darwin as CD and Biesemeyer Tool Co., Phoenix Pylon Racing Association, and The Arizona Model Aviators as sponsors. I will be waiting for the results of this one, guys.

WELL, as I am writing this, it is still snowing and very cold in most of the United States-even here in Texas. However, by the time you read this, the '86 racing season will be just getting started, and it looks like another full year of racing is in store for us from 1/2A all the way up to Quarter Scale. The last couple of years, I have written about a race in Smyrna, Tennessee usually put on in the early spring. These folks put on a fine race, and a lot of people from all over usually come to it. This year's race is going to be held on April 26 and 27 with Quarter Midget, Formula One and Sport Pylon. Contact Greg Doe, 407 Pony Drive, Smyrna, TN 37167 for further information.

ROOTS. From time to time, I receive letters asking about Pylon Racing. So, let's look back to the beginning and see what Radio Control Pylon Racing is all about. The urge to race dates back to early civilization with foot and chariot races held during Greek and Roman periods. The risk, excitement, and challenge of racing are basic to human nature. Racing appeals to many due to its objective method of determining the winner, i.e. first to cross a finish line or the shortest elapsed time from start to finish. There is little subjectivity in juding the outcome of any race. Presently, we enjoy races involving boats, automobiles, horses, and even turtles. Just about anything that moves can be used in a race.
