How To Do It Mounting Large Outrunner Motors - 2009/05
This easy method allows you to propel almost any model
WITH THE INEXPENSIVE and powerful outrunner motors and Li-
Poly batteries that are available nowadays, a new wave of larger
models is being converted from glow to electric operation. All of these
bigger aircraft come with beam mounts that are unsuitable for motors,
and motors are usually considerably shorter than their glow-engine
equivalents, so the motors can seldom be bolted directly to the firewall.

I LIVED THROUGH the bad, old days of
glow ducted fan. I have shoeboxes full of old,
burnt Rossi and O.S. .91 pistons to prove it.
Some modelers achieved reasonable
reliability with the large glow systems, but my
experience and that of most others was 10
flights at best before a pipe seal, glow plug, or
something else went; then you were testing
the rather limited gliding abilities of a 15-
pound jet (or brick).

most of us seem to have much less
time on our hands than we used to.
Long evenings spent slicing hundreds of
1/32-inch ribs from contest balsa are not part of
the picture for the Average Joe nowadays,
including me. It’s not that I wouldn’t like to—
I greatly enjoy the process of traditional
modeling—it’s that I can’t. Given the choice
between a placid evening at the workbench
making bigger pieces of wood into smaller
ones or attending a school board meeting, it’s
no choice; we all have priorities.
