RC Soaring World Championships
THIS WAS A PHYSICAL CONTEST. But on the last day Peter Blommaart of Belgium added, "It was not only one of tired legs, arms, and bodies, but one that was from the heart." How else do you account for 80 organizers and workers coming from all over Australia to help pull this event together? Or the hospitality shown by Leo O'Reilly (and crew), who met every group upon arrival? Or the help that came out of the pit area to assist the lone entrant from Sweden? Or the help from George Pappas, an Australian who traveled 1,800 miles and then volunteered to help the Mexican entrant who found he was the only member of his team to show up? For most of the people there, it was a contest from the heart.

LAST month, this column highlighted a few subjects seen at the Australian F3B World Championships. There was also a feature article in the same issue that covered the event more in depth. However, judging from the phone calls and questions regarding the details of the performances, a lot of you readers were interested in a further breakdown of the scoring. Details of each round constitute a total of nearly 50 pages of tabulations, which includes a listing of each flier's performance with a display of his raw and final scores for each task. NEAT! A little item which served very well throughout the F3B World Championships in Australia was the monitor pictured here this month. It is small enough to sit comfortably on an 8 1/2 × 11 sheet of paper. It's labeled the "AOR Communications Receiver" and the model number is AR 2001, and it is manufactured by AOR Ltd. of Japan. Besides covering all frequencies from 25 through 550 MHz, the AR 2001 also has a 20-memory scan feature. This means a whole band, such as 72 MHz, can be programmed into it.

I985 NATS: RC Soaring
DEAR BOSS: This was more like it. The 1985 Nats, I mean. Remember Reno and all the negative comments, bad attitudes, and in general the bad time had by all? Well, I'm pleased to say this year's event was the antithesis of the bash held in 1984. It's not that this contest was perfect-there's no record of one yet with that rating-but the feeling in the air by all of the contestants and officials was that we've going to make this one work. That attitude prevailed for five days. Contest Director Jeff Troy and about 15 of his club members from the Valley Forge Signal Seekers, along with other volunteer help, kept the biggest-ever Thermal Soaring event humming for almost a week.
