it’s sunny—is the location of the
annual AMA Convention. Unlike
last year (when I swear I saw a surfer
riding the waves created by the deluge
of rain 40 miles inland), the weather was
great.

IT IS DIFFICULT to write this column
because I have to tell you of the passing
of a legend of AMA’s leadership. On
May 21, 2004, District V Vice President
(VP) Jim McNeill passed away after
suffering a heart attack. It occurred while
he was preparing to visit an event
conducted by one of the clubs in his
district.

AS I WRITE THIS, the official period of
mourning has ended for those lost on the
space shuttle Columbia, and the
investigation to discover the cause of the
accident is just beginning. The seven
astronauts who lost their lives in the
tragedy are heroes. They gave their lives in
the pursuit of scientific knowledge that
will enrich our lives for many generations
to come.
