I Have Met the Enemy . . . And He Is Me!
I HAVE FINALLY identified the problem I have been having with this hobby/sport/obsession of ours, and I am well on the road to recovery. As always, diagnosis of the disease was the hardest part. Once diagnosed, the only thing left was determination of the best treatment for my unique lifestyle. I share this account of my experience in the hope that it will lead others to seek treatment and lead them to better, longer, more fulfilling lives. I now freely and openly admit that I have suffered from haves for about 20 years. At first I didn't recognize the symptoms, even though the National Foundation for the Eradication of Haves (NAFEH) regularly publishes the 14 warning signs in most popular magazines and airs them on some cable television stations. This dedicated group certainly did all that could reasonably be expected of them to help me overcome my problem.
It's About Time
A MECHANICAL DETHERMALIZER timer that weighs less than two grams and will time accurately for over 10 minutes? Not likely, you say. Well, the timer pictured in this article weighs 1.85 grams and is repeatable within four seconds at the two-minute level. At 10 minutes it is repeatable within 20 seconds. The size is a very compact 7/32 × 17/32 × 1-1/16 in. Finally, note that it can be constructed in less than an hour from a toy that costs less than $2. In fact, we recently built four in less than two hours.

On May 5th and 6th, an extraordinary joint meeting of the Executive Council (EC) and the Chairmen of the Contest Boards was held. These two bodies act jointly on all matters affecting the Contest Board procedures and many of the general rules governing flying in other than competition. In the past, all these actions have been accomplished by mail and, as a result, have often taken an inordinate amount of time to complete. This year, in order to try to solve some of the problems of the publication of the AMA rule book and to introduce the Chairmen of the three new Boards (RC Soaring, RC Helicopters, and RC Racing) into the mainstream of the governing process, the joint meeting was introduced.
