Control Line: Speed
The first noteworthy item concerns the European Championships held in England July 8-12 at the Three Sisters Flying Field. Although the date is just shortly after this issue of MA is in the hands of readers, it may be timely for some of you. For those who are planning a holiday in Europe, this would offer an opportunity to visit with the international Speed fliers. It would be nice to see some American Speed fliers there. HELP! HELP! This Speed column is suffering from a lack of correspondence concerning Speed activity across the U.S. Why is it no one takes the time or the effort to write without me creating an excuse for Speed modelers to write? If I do not receive any feedback, how can I write about a subject? The only information I have to substantiate any activity in the U.S. is from the East Coast. Otherwise, Speed must be dead everywhere else. There is a wealth of information available concerning Speed, but it is a major problem with Speed modelers to sit down and compose a letter or construction article.
I985 NATS: CL Speed
THIS YEAR'S Nats site was historic Westover Air Force Base, Massachusetts. The primary mission of the base is to support the 439th Tactical Airlift Wing, Air Force Reserve. The wing is headquartered at Westover with Colonel James H. Handy as the base commander. I would like to thank Colonel Handy and his staff for making our stay at this year's Nats something special. The number of contestants entered in Control Line Speed resulted in the third-largest number of entries (175) for the entire Nats. This was attributed to quite a few fliers coming from the eastern part of the U.S., plus the emergence of a few newcomers.

SPECIAL REPORT. This is a report about the place where most of the CL Speed action seems to be: the European scene. European Control Line Flying Championships July 9-12, 1985 Three Sisters Recreation Area Wigan, Greater Manchester, England Over 200 competitors, representing 21 countries, the largest number ever to compete in Britain, converged on Wigan during the first week in July to pit their skills during the European Control Line Flying Championships. Twenty-eight fliers competed in FAI class F2A (CL Speed). This new permanent flying site, with caged arenas and electronic jury tower, vibrated to the roar of engines and the chatter of many "tongues" in what became, by the end of the week, the "Friendly Championships."

FUN. It's in the form of .21 Fun Speed. Please read on for more information. This month's column covers an entry-level Speed event that is designed for young folks, middle-aged folks, old folks, and folks who would like to bring the fun back into Speed flying. This will be run as an unofficial Speed event held in conjunction with the 1986 AMA Nationals at Lake Charles, LA. The monies for the trophies will be put up by Gene Hempel and Charlie Davis. The event will be designated .21 Fun Speed. In response to numerous letters and phone calls concerning this event, the following rules were suggested. Please read very carefully to make sure you understand each step.
