GOLLYWOCKS GALORE: Alabama resident Tom Hepler sent me the photo of the "Gollywock Gang" taken at last summer's MACH (Model Airplane Club of Huntsville) meet. He says that the event was run as a mass flyoff, with the winner being O.C. Stewart. Carl Loehle sponsored the event with some nice merchandise obtained from Midwest Products Co., which once produced the fine Wally Simmers design in kit form. Check the photo caption for the names of the Gang members. The site for this particular contest was the Old Huntsville, AL Airport, but future events are to be relocated to the larger Old Courtland Air Base, which is about 55 miles distant.

BASIC YELLER: The best of the Pee Wee-30 designs of the 1987 Midwest contest circuit was undoubtedly Bill ("Ole Yeller") Hale's diminutive yellow bird. His was the first and only PW-30 model to max out in area contests throughout the year. Using the transparent body of a small hypodermic syringe for a fuel tank, he logged consistent engine runs of between 14 and 15 sec. Bill's lifelong passion for the color yellow has earned him the handle of "Ole Yeller," and since the finishes of all of his models (and most everything else he owns) are located in that same color spectrum, it is most appropriate that we label his simple little model, "Basic Yeller."

NFFS NEWS. Each year, the National Free Flight Society selects 10 model designs from as many categories and recognizes them as their "10 Models-of-the-Year." The committee has made its choices for 1988, and Chairman Jon Zeisloft has provided us with the following list of awardees: ( International Class: Since 1987 was an FAI World Championship year, with the proceedings taking place last summer in France, the process of selecting winners in the categories of FIA/Nordic, FIB/Rubber, and F1C/Power was apparently a rather simple task. All three selections were for the models which won their respective events at this once-every-two-years world affair. No one can really contest these choices, either, since they were the resultant best in their fields, and the trek to the winner's circle at any world champs is long, dedicated, and sorely earned.

NFFS AWARDS. Gilbert Morris, current chairman of the NFFS (National Free Flight Society) Ten Models of the Year Award Committee has released the 1986 selections. They are: International Class: F1A (Nordic)-The model of World Champion Yue Liang (People's Republic of China); F1B (Rubber)-AA-27 with variable pitch and delay prop by Aleksandar Andrukov (U.S.S.R.); F1C (Power)-The model of 1985 World Champion Nikolay Nakonechny (U.S.S.R.). AMA Outdoor: Large Power-Satellite `C' (Modified) by Randy Archer; Small Power-1/2A Uranus by Joe Wagner; Rubber-Terrible Coupe by Charles Markos.

ACTIVE FF GAS enthusiasts who reside east of the Mississippi River are certainly aware of the seemingly endless struggle in recent years to obtain and retain suitable flying sites for competitions. Large sites have become all but extinct, and many of those currently available are much closer to the "small field" variety. Some years ago, the AMA Contest Board recognized the need to tailor Free Flight competitions according to the size of the flying field. Categories I, II, and III resulted, each with special engine run and flight time limits. A separate National Record tally was kept for each of the three categories.
