BORN TO FLY - 2014/09
If you have been to any major RC event or trade show in the US, I’m betting that, at some point, you have seen Frank Noll. I learned who Frank was in the earliest period of my RC career and now I’m proud to call him a friend.

I’m writing this only one day after we had snow here in Nashville, Tennessee. You are reading this in the full heat of summer. I thought that was an interesting perspective because I’m at the end of my winter builds. I have a workshop full of airplanes that are ready for the heat to turn up and the wind to die down.

If there is a Disneyland for RC enthusiasts, Triple Tree Aerodrome is the place and Joe Nall Week is the event. Although I wasn’t at the first Joe Nall Week, held in Woodruff, South Carolina, I have been going long enough to remember when there was a single flightline. Now there is a main line, a 3-D flightline, a helicopter line, an electric flightline, a CL area, and more! Every year there are new additions to the grounds, and this year is no different.

I got my start in RC by going to a garage sale. I found a used trainer from Italy that was built but had no gear in it. I had no idea what it was and even less knowledge of RC.

You never know whom you are standing next to or will meet at an RC event. I met Eddie Saurenman of Saurenman Aero Works (SAW) at Joe Nall Week this year. He is a full-scale pilot, aircraft designer, and a member of The Profile Brotherhood forum, and he had owned a Billy Hell Mojo (an airplane I sold that was designed by Paul Swany).
