AMA news 2003/09
THE JOHN A. ZAIC Award is a new
annual award administered by the Academy
of Model Aeronautics. Frank Zaic created it
as the result of a donation to AMA by his
brother, John. When John died in 2002, he left
funds to Frank to recognize aeromodelers
who have contributed to the history of model
aviation.
Micro-Flying - 2008/01

micro-flight activity has developed. It
happened almost immediately after
Horizon Hobby’s ParkZone Cessna 210
Centurian was delivered to hobby shops
across the country. First shown at April’s
Toledo Show, this 15-inch-wingspan,
three-channel, all-foam, scale RTF, which
weighs 18 grams (roughly 2/3 ounce),
became available to buyers a few months
later.
Record Achievement Recognized - 2004/09
Maynard Hill’s world-record-setting airplane TAM 5—
which crossed the Atlantic Ocean in August 2003—was on
prominent display at this year’s Toledo R/C Expo. It
attracted a great deal of attention because of its historical
significance. Many who saw the model and took pictures of
it commented that it looked “so ordinary.”

THE TOLEDO R/C
Expo, which is one of a
long series of such events
and probably the best known
around the world, celebrated
its golden anniversary this year.
To highlight the event, leaders of
the host club—the Toledo Weak Signals—
wore white tuxedos on the last of the three
show days. It was a special occasion to top
off an amazing history that began in 1955.
Wayne Yeager, who was co-director of this
year’s show, provided many of the historic
details.
NIRAC Indoor Championships - 2004/10
THE POTENTIAL OF last year’s first Indoor Championships—
which, as a new event on the aeromodeling scene, was compromised
by conflicts with other events and a late site change—was realized
this year with a much bigger number of entries and great flying.
The annual event, held again this year at the Oakland Yard
Athletics dome in Waterford, Michigan, June 4-6, had many
interesting models, action, and people. There were 33 fliers from 11
states and Canada.
