With the flying season now in full swing, you may be considering potential upgrades for your helicopters. There are plenty to choose from, and KDE Direct has long been a forerunner when it comes to quality upgrades.

Learning to fly helicopters can be challenging. Add to that the lingo that comes with helis, and it can be somewhat confusing to a beginner. Compounding this are the many RTF helicopters that are now available, which are perfect for getting into the air quickly, but the pilot misses out on the education that he or she could get from building an aircraft from a kit.

There are many choices to be made when it comes to selecting the power setup for your helicopter. I’m not referring to motor power, I’m discussing servo power. In the helicopter world, we want speed, torque, and consistency. Until this review, I had a simple, two-cell 7.4-volt LiPo plugged straight into my receiver to power my high voltage servos, which is what many others use. This had worked well for me, so I was curious when I started to read about Scott Gray’s new Reactor HVX.

One of the most frequent comments I hear about 3-D helicopters is, “I’ll never be able to fly like that,” which is usually followed by “How long did it take you to learn how to do that?” When watching pro pilots or any pilot who puts on a good show, it’s sometimes hard to believe that they too started out by learning how to hover.

I’ve always felt that wiring a helicopter is an art form. It’s the job that takes me the longest when I build a helicopter. I tend to agonize for hours about which way to route a particular wire and the best way to secure it in place, making sure it isn’t rubbing against any hard corners.
