District II - 2015/05

The 2015 Westchester Radio Aero Modelers (WRAM) Show, February 20-22, 2015, is in the books. Even with an ominous weather forecast and snowstorm Saturday afternoon, the weekend event was well attended. New exhibitors were present this year including a booth staffed by several tri-state-area Control Line aircraft clubs.

District II - 2015/04

Members frequently ask me how can they grow their club or bring new people into the hobby, especially young people. The answers are simple yet require some time and effort. Publicizing your club and hosting events and activities that introduce model aviation to the general public are essential. One such program is conducted by RC flying club Wing and Rotor of Western New York. Richard Anderson, club vice president, sent the following report on the club’s successful program.

I frequently I see someone forget to bring his or her AMA card to an event. At least 31 states now accept digital auto insurance cards on smartphones. AMA-issued, digitally secure membership cards could be a reality someday, if security and other questions are addressed.

Winter brings special events as outdoor flying slows down. On November 22, 2014, I visited Walt’s HobbyTown and its annual Secret Santa Sale. The event is more than a sale, where store proprietor Bruce Throne carries on the tradition of giving back to modelers.

District II - 2015/01

All modelers lost a great friend in District II Leader Member Don Typond, who passed away this past fall. Don served as District II’s representative to AMA’s Scale Contest Board and he was an accomplished professional in the publishing and model aircraft industries.
