Inside the Electronic Speed Control - 2010/11
MYSTERIOUS EVENTS are often
attributed to mystical causes, and brushless
power systems are about as mysterious as
things get in RC. Some systems work and
others don’t. Why?
The usual explanation is something along
the lines of, “It’s a mystery!” The reason for
a component failure is a mystery to most
involved, but understanding a bit more about
brushless systems can go a long way toward
helping a hobbyist enjoy outstanding
reliability in an electric-powered airplane or
helicopter.

Dr. Mark Drela shares his airfoil-design theory
THE WING IS the thing in RC Soaring, and
one of the most respected authorities in RC
sailplane design is Dr. Mark Drela of the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology
(MIT). He has been active in FF and RC
model aircraft since childhood. He’s the guy
behind the AG series of airfoils that is used
on a number of the latest super-gliders.

AEROTOW IS A BLAST! It’s one of
the few team events in RC flying. It
mixes big sailplanes and big powered
models and their pilots on the field.

HI, GROUP! My name is Lee and I’m a
Soaring addict. Today we have a special
treat; master airframer Don Peters, the man
behind Maple Leaf Design, has been kind
enough to share some of his thoughts and
experiences with us.
