IT’S NO SECRET that our economy is in a
recession; most of the world is suffering from
the same economic woes. As we tighten our
fiscal belts, the first cutbacks usually involve
discretionary spending. Discretionary income
includes money spent on luxury items,
vacations, and nonessential goods and
services.

WELCOME BACK. Thanks to winter’s
frosty grip, it has been a relatively quiet
month in the Northeast with regards to
giant-scale modeling. However, the slack
time provided me with an opportunity to
visit Nick Ziroli Plans (NZP), to check out
its latest and greatest offerings.

IN THE TWO previous columns I wrote
about working with foam on my models. I
described the lost-foam process using blue
foam to make components off of
fiberglass parts. I used this method to
make a tail cone, spinner, and cowl for my
latest project.
I also described how to make wing
skins from balsa sheets and how to
strengthen foam wing cores by installing
full-height plywood spars.

WELCOME BACK.We’re smack in the
middle of summer. That means warm days,
barbecues, ice cream, and lots of RC activity.
Plan to attend one of the Giant Scale
events in your area. If gas prices are giving
you second thoughts, grab a couple of friends
and share the expense. Not all aircraft have
wings or rotors. In this month’s column there
are three fantastic models: one with three
wings, one with two wings, and one with no
wings at all.
