Radio Control: Pylon Racing

OUR FORMULA I racers have not seen much change over the years, so when something new comes out, it is worth writing about. What follows is a story about a great new Formula I pylon racer written for us by Jerry Small. Take it away, Jerry: "There isn't a full-size Formula One called a `Kaze Killer'! "The Formula I rules state: `Models must be a replica of the 190-cu. in. class of full-size Formula I racing aircraft.' "Listen my children and do not wither, 'cause I'm going to tell you about the `real' Kaze Killer. With tongue firmly planted in my cheek, let me tell you how this outrageous name of Kaze Killer came about.

TIME REALLY FLIES when you're having fun! I can't believe that we're already at the end of another summer of great racing. Next up will be the Q-500 (Editor's note: That's Quickie 500) championships in Houston, Texas, and the Formula One Championships in Crows Landing, California. Look for a full report on these meets in future issues. Also, there will be a new Quickie 500 engine for 1993. I will report on this in the near future.

WOW! WHAT A SEASON. New engines! New events! New records! District VIII just had its Q-500 Championship Race in Fort Worth, Texas. Norm Johnson won this one; more in a future issue. What a busy season I have had in Formula One-starting with the Phoenix race in February, then on to a great race in Las Vegas. In April I went to the 4th Annual Bob Downey Memorial Race. Here is a report by Lyle Larson: The Annual Bob Downey Memorial Race was held at Whittier Narrows in April. It was two one-day contests. We had quite a few out-of-towners show up, including Norm Johnson, Bill Hager, Rich Tocci, and Chip Hyde.

'92 NMPRA's Formula I Championship Race

The 1992 National Midget Pylon Racing Association's Formula One Championships was held at the Crows Landing, California, Naval Auxiliary Landing Facility on October 24-25. Forty-six pilots from across North America, including two from Canada, came to compete in the most demanding Formula One event of the year. Only those who qualify are invited to compete in this race. Fliers must finish in the top 20% in their district, finish in the top 10 at the AMA Nationals (or in the top three at the Canadian Nats), be a previous winner, or be an NMPRA officer.

THE NMPRA QUARTER MIDGET Championships for 1992 was held at Rough River, Kentucky, October 10-11. Before Dan Kane Jr. gives you the results, here's a news flash for you Q-500 fliers. A new RC .40 engine hit the market March 1, and it promises to add more spice to the increasingly crowded AMA Quickie engine market. Features of the ABC engine include an alloy piston material developed especially for high-performance engines, a unique Ram-Jett carburetor, and a magic muffler tuned for Quickie racing rpm. Early tests indicate competitive horsepower at a moderate price.
