Radio Control: Pylon Racing

I JUST REVIEWED a hot race report from Rick Landers. After the race report, I'll finish with Drew Jerina's painting and finishing tips. "The 19th Annual Southern Regional Championships, hosted by the Atlanta R/C club, was held on the weekend of April 30 and May 1, 1994. The weekend was jam-packed from start to finish with four different racing events held in two short days.

Check out Jerry Small's Kaze Killer Quarter Midget by calling him at (817) 379-6468. Dave Shadel is now selling the Tettra "Bubbleless" fuel tank along with the Prather Pitch Gage and a great tach called the Master Tach. Contact Dave at (702) 265-7523. Gary Hover is selling his Kaze with molded wing. Gary can be reached at (209) 625-0325.

FIRST, JUST ONE more note about Quarter Midget. Why we ever let this event get eliminated, I will never know! Here is a letter from John Hughan of Australia: "I read your July 1993 column in Model Aviation with amazement. The reason for this is, we in Australia had many years ago based our Pylon classes on what Americans were running at that time. And because of this, we have progressed with leaps and bounds. I would say, outside America, Australia has the most active and successful Pylon scene. So thanks to America we are still growing.

FLYING RADIO-CONTROLLED model airplanes can be enjoyed by everyone, and today's technology in radios, models, and engines makes modeling pretty easy. I consider Pylon racing to be the premiere event for radiocontrolled model airplanes. Just about anyone can race, but you must be pretty sharp in order to do well. As in many types of competition, the young flier has the edge. Better reflexes and better eyes-about the only thing young fliers lack is experience. This combination puts younger fliers on an even plane with us older folks (you know who you are). See how a couple of young Pylon racers are doing:
