Radio Control: Pylon Racing

WE SURE HAVE A LOT of Q-500 racing this year. It is hard to keep up with what is going on, but I'll try. The latest news flash is that Gail "Jake" Jacobson set a new Q-500 record of 1:00:13. Jake was using a Nelson engine. Boy-so close to that one-minute mark! (I am not sure what the Quarter Midget record is. Someone help me out on this one, please.) Our Formula I record still stands at 1:03, by Rich Verano. For those of you who do not know, Q-500 is flown on the short Quarter Midget course; Formula I is flown on the long course.

WE HAVE SEVERAL MONTHS of building tips, and we have missed some contest reports. So we are going to back up and pick up a couple. But first, here is an item that you need to add to the list of Pylon racing suppliers that we printed last month: the Master Tach made by Allen Booth. This is the tach I use. It is very accurate. If you are like me-always leaving your tach on and running down the batteries-you will not have to worry about that when using Allen's Tach. It will shut itself off if it's left on for even a short time. Boy, it sure works for me!

WOW, what a year of Pylon Racing we have had-and it's not over yet. Something that I think will be getting more popular is Giant Scale Racing. There is already an unlimited and a T-6 class; Formula I will be added in 1994. Here is some information about this year's big racing event, sent to me from Richard Bridi: "Plans for The Unlimited Madera '93 are well under way.

A BIT OF BAD NEWS: I have just learned of the passing of a fellow pylon racer-Number 8B, Joe Stream. Joe and his family have been very active in RC. Joe was one of the pioneers of pylon racing. While he had not been doing much racing the last few years, he had been helping some of us by making very good Formula I props. We will miss you, Joe.

The Best Quickie 500 RC Pylon Race Fliers Were at NMPRA's '92 Q500 Championship Race

THE NMPRA (National Miniature Pylon Racing Association-a special interest group-ed.) has a championship race for Quickie 500 just like it does for Formula I. This year the race was scheduled for Houston, Texas. The race site was Scobee Field. The Space City R/C Club was the host, and Dick Ritch was the Contest Director. This group really knows how to put on a contest. The group has a lot of practice, though. You see, it usually puts on several pylon racing contests a year.
