I’VE BEEN BUILDING model airplanes
of one kind or another for 60+ years and
writing for magazines for 27. This is the
76th published design from my drawing
board. In its way, the Cruiser 60 has been
the most pleasant surprise of all time.

THE ANSWER: For several months I’ve batted around varied
opinions concerning whether building and flying model airplanes
is a sport or hobby. Bill Hannan’s book Model Builders & Their
Models provides delightful insight into the puzzle.

Flying for Fun - 2005/04

PROOF OF THE PUDDING: I’ve used that phrase all my life and
have no idea what it really means! Presumably, as used, it means
tasting the cooked product to ascertain its quality. That being the case,
flying a model-airplane construction project would fit the phrase,
wouldn’t it?

A PROBLEM DEFINED: In part of last
month’s column I discussed some
social/economic factors that lie beneath the
nationwide shortage of flying sites for
model airplanes. My thesis was essentially
that because of the exploding population of
the US, more and more utilization pressure
has been created for the diminishing
quantity of suitable land.

HOW ABOUT THAT? Sharp-eyed reader Sam Phillips wrote
to ask if the signature of Rear Admiral J.S. McCain on the Navy
certificate for Brad Harrington’s identification-model work (in
the July 2003 column) might be related to Senator John McCain
of Arizona. Frankly, I had paid no attention to the signatures,
and a fun story line almost got away.
