District X 2014/07
It’s always nice to ask for volunteers and get more than you expected. That’s what happened when I asked for associate vice presidents (AVPs) to volunteer in the greater Phoenix area. I was hoping for one, and three stepped forward. Please help me to welcome Kurtis Chandler, Alan Friedman, and Jim Mohan. Jim and Kurtis live in the Phoenix area, and Alan is between Phoenix and Tucson in Casa Grande.

I have an interest in helping clubs to put their best foot forward to the public. Most successful clubs go out of their way to welcome new members and be an asset to their community.

Recently in District X, we had a unique experience with a Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR). TFRs are typically issued by the FAA to restrict the airspace around the US President when he travels. They have been an impediment to aeromodeling for the last 10 years.

I want to lead this month’s column with a safety reminder. The West has been experiencing an unusually dry winter. I hope we get some late rain, but even if we do, we typically have large expanses of dry grass near our fields.

AMA Expo 2014 was a great success. AMA reached a significant agreement with the FAA, one of our staff members was admitted into the AMA Model Aviation Hall of Fame, a number of youths had a chance to try aeromodeling, and many great new items were on display to tempt those who attended.
