About Us Model Aero - 2012/05
If the name Model Aero doesn’t ring a
bell with you, the name Polaris should
if you enjoy float flying. The Polaris is
based on the North Star design by Laddie
Mikulasko and was adapted to an electricpowered
foam model by Steve Shumate.
It is Model Aero’s most popular offering
and you would be hard-pressed to attend
a float flying event and not see at least one
Polaris taking to the sky.
Review Parkzone Icon A5 BNF - 2012/05
The first time I laid eyes on the
ICON A5 was at the 2010
EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh,
Wisconsin. The full-scale aircraft
looked to revolutionize the Light
Sport Aircraft (LSA) industry with the
ability to fly from land or water, and it
had an appealing, sleek look.
Apparently, I wasn’t the only one who
felt that way because the $139,000 fullscale
aircraft had a lengthy backorder
list! If I had that kind of money, I would
definitely own one.
Midwest Regional Float Fly - 2012/05
I a certain beauty and grace to the way they look.
I especially enjoy the amphibious aircraft of the
1930s, such as the Grumman Goose or the Sikorsky
S-39.
Although I haven’t had the opportunity to fly in any
of those classic watercraft, I have enjoyed rides in a
Cessna and a Maule, the latter of which arrived at the
2011 Midwest Regional Float Fly. The ride was thanks
to Mike Weltyk, and it allowed me to get a great aerial
photo.
THE INSIDE LOOP - 2012/05
Having previously lived in
Florida and being able to fly
year-round, moving to a winter
wonderland such as Indiana makes me
look forward to spring. Although the
famed “building season” has certainly
helped me complete a few projects, I
find myself eager to
fly. Fortunately, I have
indoor flying and the
flight simulator to
hold me over, but by
late March I have the
urge to pull out the
bigger stuff.
