I first met Mark Freeland in 2009, when he visited the AMA with a vintage suitcase in tow. He was eager not only to share with then-Model Aviation editor Michael Ramsey and me his newly designed aircraft, he wanted us to fly it. When he cracked open the suitcase, we were surprised to find that two 32-inch wingspan models were packed inside.

Anyone who is familiar with Precision Aerobatics or 3-D flight has likely heard the name Andrew Jesky, or simply AJ. Beyond being an F3A World Championship competitor and a Camp AMA instructor, Andrew is also a noted aircraft designer who recently started his own company, AJ Aircraft.

As I write this, winter weather has finally given way to warmer temperatures and the International Aeromodeling Center here in Muncie, Indiana, was populated with happy modelers putting in some of their first flights of the year this past weekend.

The AMA Expo, as the show is now named, has a history reaching back to 1978. It was originally known as the International Modeler Show (IMS) and was founded by Bill and Anita Northrop.
