Park View: Maxford USA Curtiss Jenny Electric ARF - 2007/07
“IT’S ABOUT TIME somebody made a
practical model of the Curtiss Jenny” is what I
thought when I saw the Green Models
rendition parked humbly at the Maxford USA
booth display table during the 2006 AMA
Convention. I stopped by repeatedly to absorb
the ARF’s fine craftsmanship and the amount
of scale detail that was included on such a
small model.

That’s funny; it doesn’t look like a
peanut. But what Gene Smith did
capture for us this month as an FF
construction project is a charming aircraft
with a humble history.

ood pilots come from all over, but
how to tell whether a pilot is truly
“good” takes another good pilot.
Good pilots have something in them that is
contagious; I call it skill. How do I know?
Because I’ve found that the more time I
spend with good pilots, the more I seem to
become like one of them. Not as good, but at
least similar.

...we get submissions that include phenomenal stories...
I was lucky last year at the CL Scale
Nats to be able to report on the event
for the NatsNews. Spending time
there was relaxing and, fortunately for us,
the winds and weather were perfect. This
would have been a great year for Charlie
Bauer and his turbine-powered U-2, if he
had had room in his van for it.

One of the thrills I get from flying
model airplanes is that I can
perform outrageous stunts and not
have to endure the physical stress. Because
I’m remotely controlling the model, my
stamina for risk can become perceptively
unlimited. That is when I get “cocky” and an
accident happens. I should know better.
