SkySkimmer - 2015/05
The SkySkimmer is a model that resembles another successful airplane: the Icon A5. At our club’s float fly in the fall of 2013, I observed some beautiful flights made by the RC version of the Icon A5. I was so impressed that I was inspired to design my own model because I don’t think there is anything prettier that watching a floatplane take off and land on water.

SkyCruiser
BEFORE BUILDING any RC
airplane, it is good to know why it
should be built. The SkyCruiser
was born in my imagination to fill a
need for a realistic-looking,
electric-powered, four-channel
airplane that is influenced by all of
Cessna’s famous single-engine
four-seaters. This is not a scale
model of a particular design—it is
my own design—but I like the
features on many airplanes I’ve seen.

the perfect first-time builder’s project.
Sky Crawler
BeFore We BUILD SkyCrawler, I
would like to share a few thoughts on
coming up with this type of airplane in the
first place.
I live in Cache Valley, which is located
at 4,500 feet elevation in Northern Utah.
We are blessed, for the time being, to be
able to fly on an abandoned runway at our
local airport. That situation may change in
the future, and our club has been very
worried about that possibility.
I decided to try a so-called “park flyer” to
see what flying at a local park is all about. My
experience was basically good; however, I
wasn’t satisfied with the total flight time so I
started changing things, such as the motor and
the battery pack, which greatly increased
performance and flight time.
The basic airframe couldn’t handle the
extra weight, so I strengthened that. Then I
ended up changing the wings and the tail,
and a totally new model was born; I call it
the SkyCrawler.
