The Inside Loop - 2014/09
Yesterday I helped out two of my friends, although we’d never met. So how could they be my friends? Because we share the same interest, the same passion, and have a common bond. Because we appreciate things that fly and have dedicated a part of our life to this enriching hobby called aeromodeling.
I AM THE AMA
JS: How did you get involved with model aviation?
DS: I got a StromBecker solid hardwood model of a Piper Cub when I was young. I built it, painted it with a toothbrush, and then I wanted a model airplane that would fly. I went on to build balsa gliders, some Free Flight models, a lot of Control Line models, and radio control systems starting with tube equipment in the early ’50s. Model airplanes of many types have been my main and consistent hobby for the past 65-plus years.
FREEWING A-10 THUNDERBOLT II
Although the A-10 Thunderbolt II entered service in the 1970s, intended to target Soviet tanks, it is more prominently known today for its close-air support missions in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Warthog, as it is commonly known, was credited with the destruction of 967 tanks in the Gulf War alone.
