up the left side of the fuselage and carefully
sliding into a fabric-and-steel-tube-covered
biplane was the thrill of a lifetime for many
pilots and passengers. Feeling the vibration of
the radial engine just ahead of you and
smelling the oil and exhaust is the tonic of the
Golden Age of Aviation.

competition, as well as the good times people have, the vendor area, and the flying
site.
The 23rd yearly invitational, which took place from April 27 to May 1, was

Scale contests and championships in different
locations can give you ideas about how
competitions can be organized and run in
different parts of the country, or the world for
that matter. This month I’ll look at Scale
competition in Europe—specifically the 2003
European Scale Championships held in Gnas,
Austria, August 8-17.
