District VIII Report - 2012/06
My April column about cancer,
surgery, and recovery generated more
comments than any of my previous
63. Every comment was positive, most
relating a similar situation or a trip to
the dermatologist as a result of reading
about it here. I was worried that it
would be unsettling to most, but was
pleasantly surprised to find that it
touched modelers across the country.
Thanks to all who offered words of
support and wisdom. Keep using
sunscreen folks, it is better than the
surgery—believe me!
District VIII Report - 2012/05
Unfortunately District VIII and AMA
lost a lifelong modeler, advocate for
AMA, and friend to anyone who
flew models. Randy Hammond from
Angleton, Texas, near Houston, will be
missed by clubs and members across
the district. He attended many events
and put on terrific airshows every year.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS to everyone! I
complete my first term in office with this
issue of MA and can truly say it has been
an experience like no other in my life.
I have made hundreds of new friends,
traveled to places I had never seen before,
and have been involved in discussions or
actions I never dreamed I would face.

I HAVE A LOT to share this month, so let
me get right to it!
Dave Mathewson is AMA’s new
executive director. The search committee
dug through more than a hundred résumés
searching for the right person to lead the
staff through some of the roughest times we
have faced. The one person who stood out
above all others was Dave.
District VIII Report - 2009/11
JACK MATLOCK and I traveled from San
Antonio the Friday before the Grand
Opening of the El Paso RC Club’s new field
on August 1, and then traveled back on
Saturday. What a long trip, but well worth it.
